Abstract:

The commercial exploitation of unconventional petroleum resources (e.g., shale oil/gas and tight oil/gas) has drastically changed the global energy structure within the past two decades. Sweet-spot intervals (areas), the most prolific unconventional hydrocarbon resources, generally consist of extraordinarily high organic matter (EHOM) deposits or closely associated sandstones/carbonate rocks. The formation of sweet-spot intervals (areas) is fundamentally controlled by their depositional and subsequent diagenetic settings, which result from the coupled sedimentation of global or regional geological events, such as tectonic activity, sea level (lake level) fluctuations, climate change, bottom water anoxia, volcanic activity, biotic mass extinction or radiation, and gravity flows during a certain geological period. Black shales with EHOM content and their associated high-quality reservoir rocks deposited by the coupling of major geological events provide not only a prerequisite for massive hydrocarbon generation but also abundant hydrocarbon storage space. The Ordovician–Silurian Wufeng–Longmaxi shale of the Sichuan Basin, Devonian Marcellus shale of the Appalachian Basin, Devonian–Carboniferous Bakken Formation of the Williston Basin, and Triassic Yanchang Formation of the Ordos Basin are four typical unconventional hydrocarbon systems selected as case studies herein. In each case, the formation of sweet-spot intervals for unconventional hydrocarbon resources was controlled by the coupled sedimentation of different global or regional geological events, collectively resulting in a favorable environment for the production, preservation, and accumulation of organic matter, as well as for the generation, migration, accumulation, and exploitation of hydrocarbons. Unconventional petroleum sedimentology, which focuses on coupled sedimentation during dramatic environmental changes driven by major geological events, is key to improve the understanding of the formation and distribution of sweet-spot intervals (areas) in unconventional petroleum systems.

Abstract: Construction and demolition waste (CDW) are the largest waste products in the world today and competes as a viable recycled additive material in place of natural aggregates. Due to the increase in compressive strength of different mix proportions of CDW, it is also considered for reuse in concrete and subbase construction. This study shows the effect of CDW in expansive soil stabilization. The chemical and mechanical properties of these materials have shown that they are capable of developing compressive strength properties for replacement of cement with significant reduction in carbon emission. The inherent compositional properties of recycled CDW compared in this review suggests that CDW have good filler properties in highly expansive soils. Mixtures of crushed brick and recycled aggregates characterised based on chemical properties of different replacement ratios suggests that CDW of good-quality aggregates reduces swell potential of expansive soils and increased mechanical strength in pavement construction.

Abstract: Understanding the trends in PM levels is essential for formulating clean air plans. This paper analyzes PM data from various published sources for the years 2000 to 2010 in the Pearl River Delta Economic Zone (PRDEZ). The long-term variation in PM mass concentration is analyzed. Results show that PM , organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and show a similar trend, increasing before 2005 and then decreasing slightly. The annual average PM concentration ranges from 49.1 μg·m in 2000 to 64.3 μg·m in 2010, with a peak of 84.1 μg·m in 2004. None of these 11 years meets the new National Ambient Air Quality standard (NAAQS) for PM (35 μg·m ). Overall average concentrations of OC, EC, and are 13.0, 6.5, and 11.8 μg·m , respectively. and respectively have concentrations of 1.5 μg·m and 2.9 μg·m in 2000 and 6.4 μg·m and 5.3 μg·m in 2010, with a statistically significant average annual trend of+ 0.2 μg·m ·yr and+ 0.1 μg·m ·yr . In certain geographic regions, OC and EC contribute most of the PM , while in other regions secondary water-soluble ions are more important. In general, OC and are the dominant components of PM , contributing 20.6% and 18.6%, respectively. These results provide, for the first time, a better understanding of the long-term PM characteristics and trends, on a species-by-species basis, in the PRDEZ. The results indicate that PM abatement needs to prioritize secondary species.
